How to Get a Copy of a Louisa Court Document

The type of copy you need determines how to obtain it.

Certified copies

A certified copy has the official seal of the clerk and is accepted by other institutions as a legal document. Such copies are usually needed for:

  • Real estate deeds
  • Court judgments
  • Marriage licenses
  • Wills and probate documents

They are issued exclusively by the Circuit Court clerk's office.

Uncertified copies

Simple copies of court documents for informational purposes can be obtained at the court office or, in some cases, printed from the online system. They do not have legal force for official use.

Methods of obtaining

  1. In person: visit the Clerks of the Court office. According to the county FAQ, the clerk is the custodian of court records, and this is where real estate documents are registered and marriage licenses are issued.
  2. By mail: send a written request specifying the type of document, party names, approximate case date, and payment to the office address.
  3. Online: some Circuit Court records (land documents) are available through the remote access system of the Virginia court system. To obtain a certified copy, you still need to contact the office.
